Some of this will probably sound familiar to you if you've been into trading for awhile, but here's a quick summary of some things to remember in regards to trading music:
1.) DO NOT, under any circumstances, pay hard cash for live shows (audio and/or video). Taping privileges are a great benefit of the band's community, and their shows are not being taped to sell. In addition, you should never sell a show that you have in your possession either!
2.) Always wait at least TWO weeks before requesting the tape for a show. If the show was taped, then 9 times out of 10, the taper will be the first to let you know when it's ready. The 2 week rule is simply a nice gesture to the tapers, (as it takes time and money to tape shows) and is observed in most taping communities.
3.) There are several different ways to obtain shows that are being offered. Sometimes you can download them directly online from torrents, using software such as BitTorrent or Azureus. A good starting point to learn about downloading via torrents is wiki.etree.org.
Another option for trading shows consists of physically mailing the show to a fellow trader. This is referred to as a "B&P." An excellent resource for the basics of participating in a B&P can be found at www.mcnichol.com/bnp/.
4.) One last thing, please do not circulate the shows in MP3 formats. The tapers often prefer that you keep the shows in audio (.WAV) or lossless (.FLAC, .SHN) formats when traded. You may keep a copy of the show in .MP3 format for your own collection, but please ensure that those versions do not get circulated in the trading pool.
I think that's it for now. If anyone can think of something they'd like to add, please feel free to post it here.
Thanks, and happy trading!
