what a cool read so far guys! great idea.

let's see, i have lived in or around the dallas/fort worth metroplex my entire life.

i first learned about margot nearly two years ago. my how time flies! i was up in indianapolis for the summer NAMM 2005, which is a big guitar/musical instrument showcase. the 2005 midwest music summit was being held that same weekend throughout downtown indianapolis and broadripple. they had some sort of deal where you got a MMS wristband for real cheap if you were registered for NAMM. so, i figured it would give me something to do at night while i was up in indy, as i knew no one up there besides a few of the vendors that were at NAMM.

with my wristband purchase, i got a double CD from MMS that featured songs from selected artists that would be playing throughout the weekend. i had never heard of a single band listed that was playing. i remember questioning whether i should've spent the money on a wristband. nevertheless, i remember sitting in my hotel room, hunched over my laptop skimming through the songs on the 2-disc sampler. i circled in pen on the back of the cardboard CD case (i still have it!) this song by a crazy band named "margot & the nuclear so and so's - vampires in blue dresses". i remember hearing that very first bit of margot, and being surprised that it was a guy singing, because i, like so many others have now said, thought it would have been a chick lead singer or something.

anyways, i could go on and on, but i ended up leaving indianapolis with a new love for three bands back in july 2005: margot, cameron mcgill, and romantica. margot took my heart. when i got back home to texas, i researched them as much as i could. there was hardly any info about them out there on the internet. they only had their standard records webpage back then, and that didn't have much info on it. i ordered 2 copies of the old school "dust of retreat" (of which, for whatever reason, they only sent one, haha). i remember being so excited about this new band that i'd learned about, but frustrated at the same time, because they were soooo good, yet they were only playing shows up north at the time. we're talking indiana with a few chicago and new york dates, that's it. i was devastated that i might never get the chance to see them in texas!

finally i signed up for a myspace page and started following what was going on with them there. i would beg them to come on a tour that led them this direction, but didn't know if it would ever really happen. i remember not long after that, i learned that they had gotten signed with artemis records. i was so relieved! it was like, "thank goodness, someone finally took notice of this band!"

i had been thinking about starting up some sort of message board for them, because they had nothing at the time. i remember talking to michaela for the first time, and she told me about how there used to be a message board through standard records, but that it was no longer around. i wanted to create some place where the people who loved margot's music could get together and discuss it! i messaged the band through myspace, and i remember freaking out when i saw a message back from richard giving me his blessing to start up PKN. not long after that, i nearly had a heart attack when i learned that margot was coming to texas! they were playing 3 shows here too! i took off of work so i could hit up the denton, austin and dallas shows. this would be the first time i met the members of margot in person, back in janurary 2006. i had the time of my life. we talked a bit about the message boards, and i specifically remember casey asking me, "so how many people do we have on there -- like 500?" i laughed.

so, that's my story. and yes, to sound like a complete sap, margot has changed my life. they truly have. before them, i didn't think you could really be friends with a band. i've also learned so much about how the music business operates, for the better and the worse. it's been a roller coaster, but i'm not getting off of it anytime soon.
